THREE BRONZE BUDDHIST DEITIES FROM A KAKEBOTOKE
KAMAKURA PERIOD (13TH-14TH CENTURY)
Each hollow-cast and made for suspension, two fitted with pierced supports and one pierced at the sides; the first gilded overall and cast in the form of a Bodhisattva seated dhyanasana on a lotus platform with one hand held in abhayamudra and the other closed as if to hold a stalk or staff, the head crowned by a high crown chased with a figure of the Buddha within a filigree fringe and the body draped in loose, pleated robes, the lotus base chased with overlapping rows of small lotus leaves; the second figure finished with a black patina and cast in the form of a Buddha seated dhyanasana on a lotus base with hands held in dhyanamudra and face in meditative expression beneath arched brows and the raised usnisa, draped with loose robes open at the chest; the third figure also finished with a black patina and cast in the form of a Buddha in meditative pose with hands in abhayamudra, legs tucked under the knee pleats of the drapery in dhyanasana on the lotus platform, the eyes downcast below high, arched brows and the raised usnisa and long earlobes framing the face--4¾in.
