MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
Cast in the form of a kirin standing on a stepped, oval plinth and supporting a rectangular, framed clock on a stalk of bamboo held in the beast's mouth, the kirin and plinth finished with a black patina and the the stalk of bamboo lightly gilded, the frame surrounding the clock face and the domed back enclosing the works finished with a brown patina, the rectangular clock face iron inlaid in gilt with the circular dial with Japanese numerals bordered by inlaid gilt fruiting and flowering vines and another smaller dial--21¼in. (51.3cm.) high, 9 in. (22.8cm.) long
