SHO EARLY EDO PERIOD (circa 1680), SIGNED MUTSU (NO) KAMI FUJIWARA TOSHINAGA, FIRST GENERATION, MUTSU LINE

DAI: Sugata: shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune and chu-kissaki; nagasa: 2 shaku, 3 sun, 3 bu (70.7cm.); torii-zori of 2.3cm.; motohaba: 2.8cm.; sakihaba: 1.7cm. Jihada: itame masame with nie deki and utsuri. BHamon: midare in nie and nioi with extensive sunagashi and some kinsuji and inazumi. Boshi: hakikake. Nakago: thick, wide, ubu, curving and with a moist, brown patina; yasurime: katte-sagari; nakagojiri: kuri-jiri; mekugi-ana: two; mei: mumei. SHO: Sugata: shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune and long chu-kissaki; nagasa: 1 shaku, 7 sun, 8 bu, 8 rin (54.2cm.); koshi-zori of 1.0cm.; motohaba: 3.0cm; sakihaba: 2.1cm. Jihada: itame. Hamon: shallow, large choji becoming more gunome-like in the monouchi, executed in nioi, nie and some ara-nie and with some strong sunagashi towards the lower section of the blade. Boshi: ko-maru with some hakikake on the edges. Nakago: ubu, straight and tapering and with a dry, brown patina; yasurime: kesho-yasuri; nakagojiri: kengyo; mekugi-ana: two; mei: katana-mei, Mutsu (no) Kami Fujiwara Toshinaga.

Daisho uchigatana-koshirae: roiro saya inlaid with malachite; daisho tsuba pierced and molded with leaves with stems and gold hon-zogan and nunome highlights, signed Choshu (no) ju Tomotaka, 7.7, 7.0cm. high; pair of Goto shakudo nanako kozuka and kogai applied in shakudo and gold with peonies and rockwork, unsigned; daisho menuki of gold and shakudo kirin; dai with shakudo ko-nanako Goto fuchi-kashira applied with gold kiri-mon, unsigned; sho with shakudo nanako fuchi-kashira applied with gold taka-zogan ho-o amidst stylized clouds, unsigned. Two silk storage bags.

Accompanied by a Hozon token kanteisho for the dai, no.322241, and a Tokubetsu hozon token kanteisho for the sho, no. 120694, both dated Heisei 1 (1989) and issued by the N.B.T.H.K.
