LATE MUROMACHI PERIOD (SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY), SIGNED NIO KIYOSADA SAKU

Sugata: shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune, long chu-kissaki and takashi-shinogi (shinogi thick in cross-section); nagasa: 2 shaku, 2 sun, 3 bu (67.7cm.); koshi-zori of 2.2cm. Jihada: itame masame. Hamon: gunome in nioi and nie with sparsely scattered saka-ashi and yo and with extensive sunagashi along almost all of the omote and principally in the areas of lowest convexity on the ura, together with scattered muneyaki along most of the length. Boshi: indistinct, but probably tsuki-age. Nakago: wide, slightly curved, ubu and with semi-moist, brown patina; yasurime: katte-sagari; nakagojiri: pronounced kengyo; mekugi-ana: one; mei: katana-mei, Nio Kiyosada saku.

Uchigatana-koshirae: saya with scattered aogai (some lacquer loss); heavy, small iron tsuba with shibuichi turtle, unsigned, height 7.3cm.; green-wrapped tsuka with shakudo and gold menuki of various animals and with shakudo fuchi-kashira applied with narcissus, unsigned.
