Lot Essay

These chairs share many features with seat furniture supplied by the Berkeley Square cabinetmaking firm of William and John Linnell. Their design derives from a pattern by Linnell circa 1775-1780 (illustrated in H.Hayward and P.Kirkham, William and John Linnell, 1980, vol. II, p. 47, fig. 94) and further relates to a suite upholstered in Gobelin tapestry possibly supplied by Linnell to Robert Child for Osterley Park, Middlesex (illustrated in H.Hayward and P.Kirkham, op. cit., vol. II, p. 47, fig. 92).
A matching settee from the same suite is illustrated in P.Johnson, The Phillips Guide to Chairs, 1989, p. 88.
