The gold and silver arabesque design on a crimson ground in verre eglomisé imitates late 17th century designs in brass-inlaid tortoiseshell or 'boulle' popular in the court of Louis XIV. The ribbon-fretted and flowered pattern, inspired by the engravings of Jean Berain (d. 1711) incorporates golden acanthus corner clasps and the dieties Mercury and Diana.
