Lot Essay

The form of the broken tripod stand relates to a table by William Masters (c. 1749-56) supplied to the 2nd Duke of Atholl for Blair Castle, Perthshire (illustrated in R. Edwards and M. Jourdain, Georgian Cabinet-makers, 1944, p. 234, pl. 220). Another table with virtually identical base from the estate of Margorie Wiggin Prescott was sold in these Rooms, 31 January 1981, lot 286.
