This pembroke table relates to a group of commodes produced by the immigrant cabinetmaker, Pierre Langlois (d.1781) of Tottenham Court Road, London during the late 1760's and early 1770's. This group is characterized by its bombé outline, use of pronounced diagonal laburnum borders and central inlaid motif of a husk roundel suspended from a ribbon tie. The construction and mounts of the related commodes firmly link these pieces to other known Langlois commissions (W. Rieder, 'More on Pierre Langlois', The Connoisseur, September 1974, pp.11-13). One of these commodes (discussed op.cit.) incorporates Italian pietra dura plaques and was exhibited by Partridge (Fine Arts Ltd.), London in the Summer Exhibition of 1974.
