This design of this mirror is based on patterns published by Thomas Johnson in the 1750's and 1760's. The steep-roofed cottages appear in a design published in his Collection of Designs, 1758, pl. 41 and One Hundred and Fifty New Designs, 1761, pl. 51. This design inspired the pair of girandoles supplied to Hagley Hall, Worcestershire and now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, 1968, pl. 107-108).
