ANTIQUE SILVER-TOPPED 18K YELLOW GOLD, SEED PEARL AND DIAMOND COLLIER DE CHIEN CHOKER
Containing two hundred forty rose and old mine-cut diamonds (with French hallmarks, pearls not tested for natural vs. cultured, discoloration evident)--13 3/8 in.

First introduced in the sixteenth century, the "dog collar" became popular several centuries later, during the Victorian period. Although originally constructed from wide ribbons, ornamented with gemstones, by 1880 they had evolved into complex designs with bands of metal decorated with pearls, or several strands of ungraduated pearls. Sometime around 1900, an elaborate rectangular plaque, known as 'plaque de cou', was introduced at the center of the rows of pearls.
