"The young British archaeologist was assigned to investigate Arab harassment of the Turks during the First World War. Successful beyond his government's wildest dreams or desires, 'Lawrence of Arabia' took up the cause of Arab nationhood. Developing an almost pathalogical aversion to publicity, he later sought anonymity under the name of Ross as a Royal Air Force mechanic, and then as a motorcycle driver named T.E. Shaw. (According to Charles Hamilton, the capital R in the signature is in another hand. Probably the recipient of the photo tried to clarify Lawrence's weak r)"--W.M.
