"At the right, the 'Carlisle Indian,' the greatest athlete of the first half of the twentieth century. All-American footballer, baseball and track star, winner of both the decathalon and pentathlon at the 1912 Olympic games, Thorpe's achievements have never been repeated. With him is Boston Red Sox outfielder (and enthusiastic fisherman) Ted Williams, perhaps the greatest hitter of the modern era, who won his sixth batting championship when he was forty years old"--W.M.
