Lot Essay

Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) was born in Switzerland. He gained favor in Paris, and travelled to Russia on Voltaire's and Diderot's reccommendation. His sculpture of Emperor Peter the Great became an immediate cultural icon for Russians, and gained immortality through Pushkin's work "The Bronze Horseman".
