The following two lots were painted in Finland by Roerich duing his period of exile after the Revolution. The bright colors and picturesque scenery of the Finnish countryside give no hint of the artist's longing for his homeland, but hidden within the crags of the rocks are the faces of the Bogatyry, the semi-legendary warriors of ancient Rus', whose presence betrays his feelings associated with his exile.
