Lot Essay

Zoya Kosmodemianskaya (b. 1923 Osinovye Gai - d. 1941 Petrishchevo) volunteered for partisan service in the Great Patriotic War, but was almost immediately seized by the Germans, and hanged. Before her execution, Kosmodemianskaya made a short but heroic and defiant speech, and its dissemination after her death gave her a status of legendary proportion, and turned her into a Soviet Joan of Arc. After the war, her body was exhumed from its grave at the village of Petrishchevo, and reburied in the Novodevichi Cemetary in Moscow.
