Lot Essay

Mathews and Shapiro record twenty-six impressions of In the Omnibus in the final state, not including the present example. Cassatt's preliminary drawing for the subject shows a more congested carriage. She ultimately eliminated a seated man and an additional woman to focus on the classic pyramidal trio of mother, child and nursemaid framed by the omnibus windows and the distant bridge.
