THE RICHARD SMART COLLECTION
Richard Smart pursued a career as an actor and entertainer, sharing the Broadway stage with stars such as Nanette Fabray and Carol Channing, and appeared in many hit musicals, including "Two for the Show", "The Merry Widow", and "Bloomer Girl", and years later, the 1989-1990 season of the play "On Golden Pond."
Smart's interest in collecting art began while headlining the famed Lido nightclub in Paris in 1951. At that time it was against the law for foreigners to take money made in France out of the country. Smart put his earnings into several paintings and shipped them back to Hawaii. From these beginnings, Smart's collection grew to encompass fine and decorative arts, and collectibles acquired throughout the United States and during his annual trips to Europe. The core of his collection, however, lay in his Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.
The Parker Ranch Foundation was originally built by Richard Smart's great-great-great grandfather, John Palmer Parker, the son of an enterprising Massachusetts shipowner, who sailed to Hawaii in 1809. He was commissioned by King Kamehameha to round up wild cattle and was so successful that, as a reward, he was allowed to buy two acres of land for ten dollars. He married a high-ranking chief's daughter and began domesticating the wild cattle that roamed the volcanic slopes on his newly-acquired land. The ranch expanded steadily and at one time totalled 550,000 acres. Today it is the most successful privately owned ranch in the nation, with more than 50,000 head of cattle and an annual production of at least 10 million pounds of beef.
A lifelong patron of the arts, and a generous supporter of his community, Richard Smart knew that the success of the Parker Ranch was inseparable from the contributions made to it by generations of Kamuela families. Following the philanthropic traditions of his family, he built and funded the elegant Kahilu Theatre and provided land and funds for churches, schools, parks, government institutions, scientific research facilities and charitable organizations. The legacy of Richard Smart is certain to have a powerful impact on Hawaiian cultural and community life for many years to come.
The proceeds of the following 15 lots from the Estate of Richard Smart will contribute to the funding of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust and will benefit five Big Island charities, including the Parker School; Hawaii Preparatory Academy; Lucy Henriques Medical Center; North Hawaii Community Hospital and the Hawaii Community Foundation.
