This drawing is related to the sculpture Danseuse, 1913, a work which exemplifies Lipchitz's early curvilinear style on the eve of cubism.
The Dancer of 1913 comes after Woman with Serpent but before Mother and Children. It is, I think, a step beyond the Woman with Serpent in the direction of pure cubism. Its stem pivots around an axis to emphasize its existence in surrounding space, but the forms are generally more simple, massive and geometric. (J. Lipchitz, My Life in Sculpture, New York, 1972, p. 17)
