Robert Graham's Frieze Figures I-E and III-C are studies for the monumental Duke Ellington Memorial sculpture scheduled to be permanently sited at the northeast entrance of Central Park in 1997. The Memorial was commissioned by the Duke Ellington Memorial Fund in 1979, and is "the most complex of Graham's monuments, comprising three matrix statues, 21 variations of those matrices in the platform frieze, and the statue of Duke Ellington," (M. Tuchman, Robert Graham: The Duke Ellington Memorial in Progress, Los Angeles 1988, pp. 18 and 22 (illustrated).
