Dated by Friedländer to circa 1512, the whereabouts of the primary version of this composition, once in the Rathenau collection, Berlin, is unknown. The present lot is one of several workshop versions which include that in the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, Kansas City, Inv. no. 31-115 executed after the lost original (see M.J. Friedländer, op. cit., IX, pp. 61-2, nos. 55a-i, pl. 70).
