Lot Essay

This is a study for the larger painting by Fyt of a Mastif Drinking (oil on canvas, 37 1/4 x 49 5/8in.) in the John G. Johnson Collection, Philadelphia, Inv. no. 702. In the final version the doorway at the right was converted to a balustrade and the dog drinks rather than eats. The painting was engraved in 1818 when at Stafford House.
