John Barker was the eldest son of Sir William Barker, of Ipswich and Sproughton, Suffolk by his first wife, Mary, daughter of John Bence of Heveningham, Suffolk. On Oct. 28, 1740 he married Alice Fytche, daughter of Sir Comport Fytche. John Barker was believed to be about 28 years of age when he sat for the present portrait. He died in 1757.
