Though once attributed to Raeffaelino del Garbo by Lionello Venturi (see L. Venturi, Saggio sulle opera d'Arte Italiana a Pietroburgo, L'Arte, 15, 1912, pp. 125-6), the present work is one of two known workshop versions of a late work by Filippino Lippi, circa 1496-1500, now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Inv. no. 4079. Venturi compares this work to The Annunciation in the Caraffa Chapel, in Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome, executed circa 1493 while Raeffaelino assisted Filippino Lippi on the frescoes in that chapel. The second version, with differences, was formerly in the collections of Rigollot, Paris and Siffart de Moncourt Paris, and was with Wildenstein, Paris, in 1947.
