Unknown to Christel Thiem in 1970 (see C. Thiem, Gregorio Pagani, 1970), a preparatory study for the present work, executed in black chalk and dated by Thiem to circa 1595-1600, is recorded as being in the Uffizi, Florence, Inv. no. 10472 (op. cit., Z106, p. 92).
Though comparable, the present work would seem, therefore, to postdate Pagani's altarpiece of The Madonna and Child with Saints of 1594 which was painted for the Città di Castello, San Domenico. A further comparison can be made to an undated painting of Saint Agatha (73.5 x 56cm.) which was with Joseph Hahn, Paris, 1980 (see Revue du Louvre, 1980, no. 516).
