An unusual collection of unpublished Presidential notes which direct Striffin to summon or instruct cabinet members, to confirm various appointments, etc. [1869:] "The mourning drapery about the [White] house may be taken down" (perhaps in honor of the death of former President Franklin Pierce on 8 October 1869); [undated:] "Refer to Atty. Genl. and recommend that he have this printed so the copies may be sent to Congress"; [26 May 1870:] "Withdraw nomination of Geo[rge] W. Patton...as Marshal of West Va"; [12 February 1877:] "Submit to the Sec. of War whether the unexpired sentence of Capt. Morgan might not now be remitted"; [undated:] "The Sec. of the Navy may refer the maps, surveys & reports of the different inter-oceanic routes...to the Commissioner named to examine them"; [30 November:] "Will the Adj. Gen inform me whether before the Sec. of War left Washington, he ordered a board of Eng[ineer] officers to examine and report upon Capt. Eads work at the mouth of the Miss[issippi]"; [29 April:] "Ask Atty. Gen to make his recommendation in the Georgia cases at his earliest convenience..."
