ANTICIPATING THE NOMINATION OF VAN BUREN
"...Major A.J. Donelson leaves us in a few days for the Baltimore Convention [the Democratic nominating convention] where I hope all the delegates will have a harmonious meeting. My shortness of breath is still increasing on me, and of course, with my other afflictions, my strength gradually declining. But I am in the hands of my redeemer, and await with patience his will -- always ready to say with submission, the Lord's will be done..."
Van Buren, Jackson's Vice-President and successor, to the surprise of Jackson and other Democrats, lost the nomination to James K Polk in the convention.
