JAY GOULD TAKES OVER THE FIRM, AND SENDS HIS BROKER TO MANAGE IT

A letter written the same month Gould and James Fiske joined the directorate of the Erie Railroad: "This note will be handed to you my broker Mr. D.L. Miller, Jr. who is appointed Treasurer of N[ew] Y[ork] S[late] Co[mpany] who is to advise me of the details of the management of the business. Hereafter reports are to be made to him instead of myself. He's gone up today especially to look after the shipments of slate. We have only a few more working days before winter is on us. Please aid us all you can in getting [railroad] cars. Mr. Cramer has agreed to give us at least two per day right along but if we have orders I should like more, say 3 or 4 cans per day..."
