LEWIS, MERIWETHER, Explorer, Governor of Louisiana. Autograph document signed ("Meriwether Lewis," with flourish), as Governor of Louisiana Territory, [New Orleans?], 24 August 1809. 1 page, a small oblong, 78 x 132mm. (3 x 5 1/2 in.), very minor soiling. RARE.

A neatly written promissory note: "Due Falconer & Carmegyes...[$23.37] and a half cents..." Lewis (1774-1809), former co-commander of the famed Lewis and Clark expedition, died at age 25 a scant two months after this document was dated (he is believed to have been murdered).
