"I HOPE...THAT HE WILL BE LONG IN DYING AND SUFFER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE"

A letter bearing ill-will for an apparent acquaintance to his ailing mother: "I hope you are still breathing, you need it, and you ought to be getting some little benefit from it by now. I had no idea till I saw the papers how badly pa was beaten. I hope Johnson is now suffering his last illness and that he will be long in dying and suffer as much as possible. My left ear is healing up fine now and I hope to be rid of bandages for a while at least in the near future. Capt. Neal of the 13th Corp. got bound just like I did the other day but it only hit one side of his face. In spite of my wounds I had a good time at home and hated more to leave than ever..."
