THE CONTINENTAL ARMY DIGS IN FOR THE FINAL STAGES OF THE YORKTOWN CAMPAIGN: "WE HAVE SINCE BEEN IMPLOYED IN MAKING THE NECESSARY PREPARATIONS FOR THE SIEGE"

A rare soldier's letter from a soldier of the Continental line: "I informed you in my letter from Williamsburgh, the 28th of Sept[ember], that the Army would soon move to this place, it arrived here the next day; we have since been imployed in making the necessary preparations for the Siege; till night before last we erected our fifth Parallel within 600 Yards of the Enemies Lines, we shall continue to approach nearer & nearer till the Enemy fall into our hands, it is uncertain how long they will be able to hold out, but probible not more than 3 or 4 weeks...Our losses in killed and wounded...[are] less than would have been expected; you may inform Capt[ain] Dorrance, that, Colo[nel] Leammell in reconnoitering the Enemies lines, when we first arrived on this ground, fell into their hands and is...dead of a wound, which is said, he received after he was Captured, his loss is very much regretted by the Army. Our duty is severe...I am very healthy & want nothing more than Sleep, as we often continue 2 & 3 nights without any..."
