THE HEAD OF THE MORMON FAITH CONTRIBUTES A SIGNATURE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE UNION SOLDIERS

During the Civil War it became fashionable to solicit signatures, letters or manuscripts from eminent Americans to be auctioned at the various regional Sanitary Fairs to raise funds for the Sanitary Commission. This is the only example of Young having contributed to such a cause of which we are aware. Young writes: "Your favor of Feb[ruary] 22nd, in which you inform me that you are making a collection of Autographs to sell at a Sanitary Fair for the benefit of the wounded soldiers, and requesting me to send you mine has just been received. I take pleasure in forwarding you my Autograph herewith...."
