Lot Essay

The location of the scene has been tentatively identified as Le Treport. Le Treport, a fishing port and the nothernmost town in Normandy, is still a popular watering place. Pecrus was a collaborator of Diaz and later a friend and follower of Jongkind, but more especially of Boudin.
In 1894 Pecrus sent to the Salon, Palais des Champs Elysees, a painting of Le Treport (no. 1429). Since 1894 appears to be approximately the date of this picture, this may have been his Salon offering of that year.
