The mill depicted in this work is most likely Curzon's Mill in Newburyport, Massachusetts. According to Jeffrey Brown, the present work is only the third major oil painting from the late 1850s to have been located. A copy of a letter from Jeffrey Brown dated 16 March 1996 discussing this painting accompanies the lot.
