Lot Essay

Affixed to the reverse of work are two contemporary reviews of the present painting. One review comments: 'A very clever little picture by an artist whose name is new to us, is Music and Dancing....The face of the boy performing on a penny whistle is a splendid study and brimming over with fun'. The other review mentions: 'Music and Dancing. Yes; a combination of the arts in which both performers are as absolutely absorbed as though one were listening to the divinest symphonies of immortal composers, and the other had succeeded in engaging a prima daneuseo to the delight of the public and the managerial profit.'
