Charles-Nicholas Dodin was active at Vincennes and Sèvres 1754-1802. The present piece must, therefore, be one of his very first efforts at figure painting. A Dejeuner en Porte-Huilier with similar decoration by Dodin and also dated 1753 was sold at Christie's New York, October 1995, Lot 71.
