Lot Essay

The design of this guéridon was possibly inspired by a design for a flower stand with supports in the form of winged caryatids by Percier and Fontaine published in their influential Recueil de Décorations Intérieurs, 1812, fig. 54. This guéridon also relates to a demilune console on square supports headed by winged female busts with human feet and similar inlaid decoration illustrated by Pierre Mesangère in his Collection de Meubles et Objets de Goût..., 1807, pl. 16.
