These candlesticks are modelled on designs published in Paris in 1690 by Jean Bérain le père (1637-1711) and reproduced in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, 1986, p.58, fig. 1.8.1.

A closely related pair of candlesticks formerly in the collections of the Viennese Rothschilds is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (illustrated in C. Bremer David, Decorative Arts, 1993, pp.94-95, no. 149), and others were sold Neuilly, 20 February 1986, and Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 27 May 1984, lot 89.
