[Tipped-in:] 2 photographic views mounted on recto and verso of captioned card (as frontispiece) which read: "Embarkation of Northern Pacific Rail Road Exploring Expedition on board Steamer Mary Moody, Pend d'Oreille Lake, Idaho, July 30th 1869" and "View of Pend d'Oreille Lake in Rocky Mountains, Idaho, 2,000 feet above the Sea," respectively.
[With:] A large original photograph by Cupp & Day of Canfield, Wilkeson and three others from the NPRR Reconnoitering Party. Walla Walla, 1869. 292 x 215 mm. (11½ x 8½ in.) including mount (with printed caption), some browning and dampstaining (mostly on mount). With an autograph note signed ("Thos. W. Canfield"), as Director of the Northern Pacific Rail Road, written in brown ink on a wooden panel. Np, n.d. 180 x 216 mm. (7 1/16 x 8½ in.). It reads in part: This was taken at Walla Walla with Thermometer at 110 above zero, as I was leaving to explore the Rocky Mountains for a route for the Northern Pacific R.R..." Accompanied with Thomas H. Canfield's partially printed Northern Pacific Railroad pass, as President of the P.S.L. Co., for the year 1875. (4)
