DICKENS, CHARLES. Autograph letter, in French and English, signed ("Dickens") to Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), regarding some sketches. 6 July 1853. One page, 8vo, some light staining. "... admirable when they shall be finished according to your so wondrous power of art..."
H.K. Browne was a watercolor painter and book illustrator. His first illustration for Dickens was for Sunday under Three Heads in 1836, followed by Pickwick Papers. He continued to illustrate for Dickens for 23 years; A Tale of Two Cities was the last book for which he drew, before being succeeded by Marcus Stone. His pseudonym "Phiz" was chosen to match with the author's "Boz."
