Professor Eitner confirms the attribution of the present drawing to Géricault and dates it to his English period, circa 1820-1. According to Professor Eitner, although the drawing is not related to any known picture, it belongs to a series of scenes of London life, such as the Various Subjects drawn from Life and on Stone by J. Géricault that Géricault published in London in 1821. Professor Eitner adds that 'there can, however, be no doubt of Géricault's authorship. Conception and execution are unmistakably his, and the half-completed state which reveals the nervously spontaneous drawing beneath the thin color washes make this a particularly attractive example of his most personal late manner.'
