A member of both the Académie de Vienne and the Académie de Berlin, Alt was a celebrated painter of views and landscapes which he executed and exhibited throughout Europe in the 19th century. The present sheet represents a church in Gastein in southern Austria. The artist painted other views of the church in 1891 and 1895, L. Hevesi, Rudolf Alt, Vienna, 1911, plates. 38 and 46.
