This picture has been dated to the last half of 1912, one of the first paintings following the artist's arrival in Rome. It was here that Godward perfected his ideal of classical beauty: an Italian woman in Roman dress set against a marble background. These portrayals, which numbered more than two hundred, were the mainstay of Godward's works until his death in Rome, in 1922.
The majority of Godward's works during this period were sold in London at The Mclean Gallery. Our work was purchased directly from the artist by Clara, Countess de Courten, remaining in her collection until her death in 1980.
