Max Klinger studied at the Academies of Karlsruhe and Berlin and achieved fame for his painting as well as his sculpture.
We know from a letter written to his parents in 1882 that Klinger was working on a marble version of Cassandra in that year. The present bronze is a rare cast by Gladenbeck, authorized by Klinger. Cassandra is Klinger's most forceful image of woman, and it is a highly evocative illustration of Greek mythology.
