Hugh Bolton Jones began his art studies in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. He later travelled extensively throughout Northern Africa and Europe, where he became a member of the Pont Aven artist colony in Brittany. In 1881 he set up a studio in New York on West 57th Street. From there, Jones travelled throughout the country side of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and southern New England. It was during these travels that Jones produced the picturesque landscapes for which he is noted.
