Lot Essay

The sitter is most probably Evelyn Nesbit Thaw, whose husband, Harry K. Thaw, shot Stanford White. This portrait, painted circa 1904, has a pendant which was in the collection of Mrs. William Thaw, Evelyn's mother-in-law. The sitter is also the subject of Alexander's Study in Black and Green of 1906 (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
