Joseph Gilbert Totten (1788-1864), American military engineer, for whom Fort Totten was named, was born in New Haven and was engaged in harbor defenses and river and harbor improvements from 1808-38. He served with Gen. Scott in the Mexican War and originated the plan of operations against Vera Cruz. By the time of his death in 1864 he had been brevetted to Major General.
