The present lot originally formed part of a small ivory box (such as the example in the Walters Art Gallery) or a wing of a portable tabernacle (such as the one in the Detroit Institute of Art). The numbering on the reverse was probably intended to indicate the order of placement on the original object. The iconography is derived from the Biblia Pauperum, which is generally dated 1430.
