Centrally woven with a processional scene possibly depicting the return of Julius Caesar with soldiers on horseback riding through a town, one holding two olive branches, within associated borders woven with scrolling acanthus, reduced, areas of reweaving

Lot Essay

This tapestry is from a series depicting the Exploits and Triumphs of Roman Generals which was woven at the Bruges Tapestry works during the mid-16th century. The series concentrated on the lives of Caesar and Scipio and was woven in six editions, see G. Delmoncel and E. Duverger, Bruges et la Tapisserie, Bruges, 1987, pp. 228-233.
