With a large central medallion featuring a repousseä facing head of Medussa, enclosed by a wide filligree band composed of beaded wire, wavy ribbon wire, and plain wire at the center, with a filligree beaded wire along the perimeter of the disc and four sheet domes distributed around along the border, the loop-in-loop chain with two ribbed cylindrical collars which join the medallion

Lot Essay

Necklaces of this sort were common during the Roman period in Egypt. The type is frequently shown being worn by woman on funerary portraiture. The present example is essentially intact; only the hook and eye clasp which attaches one end of the chain to the medallion is missing.
