While Jaguar made its fame on the racing circuits of the world with their eye catching series of open sports cars such as the XK range and the later E-Type, they also produced a fine range of less expensive saloons. In 1956 Jaguar launched their new medium sized body with a 2.4 liter engine, the starting point in the development of the more recent Jaguars. The 2.4 became very popular and before long both 3.4 and 3.8 liter versions were available. The S-Type was a longer version that came with independent rear suspension, it seemed to answer the need for something better than the standard MkII. It was given a redesigned grille, thinner bumpers, hooded headlights and fully integrated turn indicators which made the front look smoother. The rear was given a larger trunk for more luggage space. In 1967 the S-Type was given a facelift that incorporated the grille shape of the Mark X and quadruple headlights. This model was named the 420.

The designation also indicated that the engine was of 4.2 liters and was the same as that developed for the E-Type in 1964. The 420 could reach a claimed 120mph. This example is believed to have only covered 40,000 miles from new. The automatic version with power steering and factory fitted air conditioning, it also has the desirable optional extra chrome wheels. The tan leather upholstery is original and has a nice patina of age. This car was purchased last year from Christie's sale of the Philip Wichard collection. The current owner commissioned a complete mechanical service and some minor corrosion that was present at the time of last year's sale has been professionally repaired. Additionally, the chrome wire wheels were completely rebuilt. It comes with receipts totalling nearly $4,000.
